Annuitant FEGLI
rates by option.

These are annuitant rates — what retirees pay. Active employees pay different rates; see the Employee FEGLI Rates page for comparison. Premiums for Options A, B, and C are adjusted by age bracket and can become prohibitive, especially for Option B multiples in later years.

Option B warning: The cost for Option B multiples more than doubles from $0.39/month per $1,000 at ages 55–59 to $0.867/month at ages 60–64. In retirement with no reduction elected, it reaches $3.90/month per $1,000 at ages 75–79 — and $6.24/month at age 80+. On $300,000 of coverage that is $1,872/month. Obtain competitive private insurance quotes before committing to Option B at no reduction.

Understanding Basic reduction options

75% Reduction: Coverage reduces by 75% over approximately 37 months starting at age 65. Premiums stop entirely at 65. You pay nothing and retain 25% of your original BIA for life. This is the most common choice for retirees who have other coverage.

50% Reduction: Coverage reduces by 50% starting at age 65. You continue paying $0.75/month per $1,000 indefinitely to retain 50% of BIA.

No Reduction: Full BIA maintained for life. Premium continues at $2.25/month per $1,000 after age 65. Most expensive option but provides maximum coverage.

Option A

Option A — Standard Coverage

Monthly premium for $10,000 of fixed coverage. Premiums stop at age 65 and coverage reduces 2% per month ($200) until it reaches $2,500. Rates may change in the future.

Option B

Option B — Additional Coverage (Multiples)

* Full reduction vs. no reduction: When you retire you elect either full reduction or no reduction for Option B. With full reduction, premiums stop at 65 and coverage reduces to zero over 50 months. With no reduction, you continue paying premiums at the escalating rates below — coverage is maintained for life but the cost becomes very significant.
